The image on our August page of the calendar is from the Kuwait Fires Project. All of the oil and gas wells in Kuwait, 732 in total, were set ablaze by the retreating Iraqi army once Operation Desert Storm began. This upwind photo is of the Burgan Field, one of the most prolific fields in the world. While you can see 20 some wells burning there are hundreds more behind the smoke.
The inset photo was of a well in North Kuwait. This well had been burning for several months before we got to it. You can see the volcano like structure that has formed around the wellhead. This is caused by the fallout of the heavier ends as the lighter ends of the flow stream burn off. The Blowout Crew is just starting the cooling off process so we can gain access to the wellhead.
